Perpustakaan Nirkabel Project at Wamena Papua
Rumah Belajar Wamena (Wamena Learning House) is located in the urban area of Wamena, the capital city of Jayawijaya Regency, Papua, Indonesia. The Wamena Learning House is the first permanent unit of the Perpustakaan Nirkabel located in an urban area with abundant electricity compared to other locations.
The Wamena Learning House serves as both a library and a shelter for children from rural areas in the Baliem Valley region. These children attend school in Wamena because there are no schools in their hometowns.
The distance from their villages to Wamena takes several days on foot, making it too far to commute daily. Even if they could find transportation, they would still need to work to cover their school expenses, such as selling newspapers, operating rickshaws, or doing odd jobs.
Considering the need for electricity, almost all of the Perpustakaan Nirkabel projects that use laptops are located in urban areas. The only two confirmed versions of laptops in rural areas are in Siberut Island, Mentawai Islands, and at the Mount Binaiya climbing basecamp in Piliana Village, Seram Island, Maluku.
